Course Description:  Geometry is a course in which of the many SD Mathematices Standards are reviewed, maintained, and extended.  This class is a combination of the goals set forth in the content standards:  Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Number Sense, Patterns & Functions, and Statistics & Probability.  Each chapter requires background knowledge in each of the above goals.  In this course we will learn what a proof is and how to prove it.  We will discuss parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles, quadrilaterals, similar polygons, right triangles, area, volume, surface area, and coordinate geometry.

Required Materials:
Textbook:  Prentice Hall Geometry by Jurgenson, Brown, and Jurgenson, 2000
            Link to online book:  http://phschool.com/
-Under Course Content enter the web code found on the inside cover of the Geometry book (aue - 0775)
-Students can find lessons for all sections and example problems for all sections to help them better understand the material.
Scientific Calculator – a calculator will not be provided for you!!
        Folder/Binder, Notebook, and Pencils

Grading:  Grades will be taken on tests, quizzes, homework assignments, and classroom participation. Tests and quizzes will account for approximately 70% of your grade and homework and participation will account for approximately 30% of your grade.  Hour examinations will be announced in advance but you may not be given advance notice of all quizzes.  Grades will be taken on a) test, b) quizzes, c) homework, and d) classroom participation.  Grades will be calculated on the district grading scale which can be found in your academic planner.  All work must be shown on quizzes and test!!!

Semester TestThe semester test is a cumulative test that covers the material taught from each chapter during the semester.  First quarter is worth 40%, second quarter is worth 40%, and the semester test is worth 20%.

Homework:  Learning mathematics is like learning to play the piano or playing basketball.  You cannot become skilled by just watching someone else do it.  You must do it yourself.  Homework will be collected periodically and graded.  It will be due at the beginning of class the next day.  You must show all your work on your homework assignments.  Late homework will be docked up to 50%.  It is due at the beginning of class the next day.  I will except late homework up to test day but after the test the grade becomes a zero.  All homework must be completed in pencil and work must be shown.  When given time in class to work on homework, use it wisely.  Don’t quit early!!

Cheating:  If you are caught cheating on any homework assignment, quizzes, or test you will receive a zero.  The principal and your parents will be contacted to notify them of the incident.

Tardiness:  You must be in the room and in your seat when the bell rings or you are tardy.  At the end of the period students will be excused when the teacher excuses them, not when the bell rings.

Absences:  Students who are absent are responsible for any make up work.  This includes missed test and quizzes.  I will not chase after you to see that you make it up.  Students will be given at least as many school days as they were absent plus and additional school day to make up the work for full credit.  If you know you are going to be absent, I expect you to complete and turn in your work before you leave.  This includes school’s sponsored activities.

Website:  Students can access my website through the Brandon Valley High School homepage (http://brandonvalley.12.sd.us) or my direct website address is http://tb003.k12.sd.us.  Located on my website are the lesson plans, homework assignments, and notes.  I put notes online each day we take them, that way if you are absent you can copy the notes online and get the assignments.  Also a great tool for reviewing for quizzes and tests!!
